ROCK AND RUSH BATTLE TO 12-12 EXHIBITION DRAW

Rock Head Coach Sawyer Is Encouraged By Opening Weekend Of Camp

Oakville, ON – On Sunday afternoon at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre, the Toronto Rock and Saskatchewan Rush played to a 12-12 tie as the NLL exhibition schedule opened up for both teams. Toronto carried the lead for most of the afternoon but ran into penalty trouble in the second half, letting the Rush back into the contest.

“The whole coaching staff is encouraged by what we saw during the first weekend of camp,” said Rock Head Coach Matt Sawyer. “We now have to make some decisions and begin to trim down the roster.”

The Rock dominated the first half of Sunday’s exhibition scrimmage against the defending NLL champion Rush with most of the Rock regulars playing on the offensive side of the ball during the opening thirty minutes. So, it should come as no surprise that 10 of Toronto’s 12 goals were scored in the first half.

An Adam Jones hat trick and a pair of goals each from Challen Rogers, Dan Craig and Dan Lintner powered the 10-4 halftime advantage. Rob Hellyer tossed in a single to help pace the Rock offence. Nick Rose played the first half and allowed just 4 goals on 18 shots.

The Rock ran into penalty trouble in the second half and found themselves playing a man short on numerous occasions. The Rush used those power play chances to get back in the game and chip away at the sizeable Rock lead. In total, Saskatchewan scored five power play goals on the afternoon.

With the game knotted at 11-11, Johnny Powless scored for the Rock to give the home side the lead. However, it didn’t take long, just 31 seconds, for Saskatchewan’s Curtis Knight to tie the game for good with 5:59 to play.

Darryl Robertson scored Toronto’s first goal of the second half on an exciting end-to-end rush. Riley Hutchcraft played the second half in goal for the Rock and surrendered 8 goals on 35 second half shots, with many of the 27 saves the second-year pro made coming while his team was a man short.

Training camp will resume for the Rock on Tuesday evening and the team will welcome back star forward Tom Schreiber. ‘Captain America’ as he’s known to most, was ill this weekend and missed the opening two days of camp.

Saturday night, the Rock will play their second and final pre-season game against the Colorado Mammoth at 7:00 p.m. ET at the TRAC. The team will also practice Friday night and Sunday morning and that will mark the end of training camp with NLL final rosters due on Mon., Dec. 10.
