ROCK DROP TO 0-3 AFTER 12-5 LOSS TO ROCHESTER

Shutout In The Second Quarter, Toronto Struggles Continue

Rochester, NY – The Toronto Rock (0-3) lost their third consecutive game, falling 12-5 to the Rochester Knighthawks (2-1) on Saturday night at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, NY.  It was the second straight loss to Rochester and the third straight game the Rock have given up 12 goals.

The big swing in the game came on a 5-minute major assessed to Brett Hickey after he dove across the crease in an attempt to score and made contact with Rochester goalie Matt Vinc.  Shortly after a Rochester power play goal, Rock Head Coach John Lovell took a bench minor and Rochester made good on the opportunity.

“I thought our guys played hard, I’m really proud of the way our guys competed tonight,” said Lovell.   “We were in the game but we got taken out of it by a bad call and then a stupid penalty on my part that made it even tougher for us.  That was somewhat of a turning point in the game.”

The Rock came out with some serious fight in them in the opening 15 minutes.  There was certainly an edge to their game and it helped them build a 2-1 lead through the opening quarter.  Rock captain Colin Doyle scored the first two goals of the game for the Rock.

A late Rock penalty in the first quarter saw the Knighthawks start the second half on the power play and they capitalized quickly, tying the game 2-2.  Rochester wouldn’t look back from there, outscoring Toronto 6-0 in the quarter and building a 7-2 halftime lead.  Three of those six goals came on the power play.  Oddly enough, the five-goal lead is the same edge Rochester had after 30 minutes in the first half of the home and home, back in Toronto on Thursday night.

Rochester outscored the Rock 3-2 in the third, but the Rock showed better than the previous 15 minutes.  Rob Hellyer and Brett Hickey each scored once as the Rock trailed

The fourth quarter didn’t provide much of anything different with Rochester outscoring the Rock 2-1 over the final 15 minutes.

Rock goals came from Doyle and Hellyer who each had a pair, while Hickey scored once.  Brandon Miller went the distance in the Rock goal making 42 saves.  Matt Vinc stopped 36 of 41, earning the win for Rochester.

Things will not get any easier next weekend as the Rock play another divisional game on the road, this time at Buffalo against the Bandits at First Niagara Center.  Toronto’s next home game will be on Friday, January 29th against the Georgia Swarm at Air Canada Centre.
