Rock Fall In OT To Philadelphia

Philadelphia, PA – The Philadelphia Wings (7-8) defeated the Toronto Rock (10-6) by a score of 10-9 in overtime and clinched a spot in the post-season in the process at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams started slowly and it was a pair of goals from Josh Sanderson that helped Toronto build a 2-0 lead well into the opening quarter.  Philadelphia got in the board with just under 2 minutes remaining in the first quarter as the Rock led 2-1 after one.

Philadelphia tied the score early before Toronto rattled off a pair to once again lead by a pair at 4-2.  The Wings score two of their own in the final 5 minutes of the half to tie the score 4-4 at the half.

The third quarter didn’t provide much offence either as both goaltenders continued to steal the show and allowed just a goal each keeping the game deadlocked 5-5 heading to the final quarter.

It had to happen, both the Wings and Rock began to find the mark with some consistency in the fourth quarter.  The teams traded goals back and forth and the lead changed hands on several occasions, but the two teams decided 60 minutes wasn’t enough and it was off to overtime tied 9-9.

The Rock got to overtime when Philadelphia was assessed a minor penalty for too many men which results in a penalty shot when the infraction occurs with less than 2 minutes remaining in regulation.  Rock forward Kasey Beirnes fired a shot to the top corner knot the game.

Just 1:01 into the extra frame and Jordan Hall ended it when he slipped behind the Rock defence and cashed in on a chance right on top of the crease.

Rock forward Garrett Billings finished the game with 2 assists to end up with an even 100 points on the season.  His 100-point season follows a 114-point season in 2012 and it is also the first time in franchise history that a player has recorded back-to-back 100-point campaigns.

Also in attendance on Saturday in Philadelphia were the mothers of the Rock players as they all traveled with the team to the game against the Wings.  It marks the second year in a row the parents have accompanied the team on the trip as last year the fathers were on board.

Toronto will enjoy a bye week next weekend as the rest of the NLL regular plays out.  Single game and 3-game playoff packs are now on sale for the Rock’s opening rough playoff game on Sunday, April 28th at 3pm at Air Canada Centre.  For the best ticket in town, visit www.torontorock.com or call 416-596-3075.
