Watson is January Player of the Month

Toronto – The National Lacrosse League has announced it’s monthly award winners and Toronto goaltender Bob Watson is the NLL’s Player of the Month for January.

Watson, who will turn 41 years old in April, has continued his brilliant goaltending and has shown absolutely no signs of slowing down.

In 3 of his 5 starts in January he held the opponent to less than 10 goals and along with Philadelphia’s Brandon Miller holds the mark for fewest goals allowed in a game this season at 5.

Watson’s season low 5 goals against performance came in Toronto’s 8-5 win over Buffalo last Saturday night and was accompanied by 50 saves to help boost his save percentage to .815 through January’s five games.

The man they call “Whipper” is just 2 victories shy of hitting the century mark for career wins and his won-lost record on the season stands at 4-0.

Another milestone on the horizon is Watson making his 6,000th career save with the Toronto Rock.  He is just 12 saves shy of that mark and will more than likely achieve that feat on the road this weekend in Boston.

Sitting 3rd all-time in saves, Watson surpassed the 6,000 career save mark earlier this season in Rochester.  He still trails Dallas Eliuk and leader Pat O’Toole on the career saves list.

The win in Rochester, by a score of 12-9, was the first time the Rock had ever won a regular season game at the Blue Cross Arena.  The Rock were 0-15 all-time at Rochester and with Watson being around since the first season of the Toronto franchise, the victory ranks as one of his career’s biggest regular season wins.

In a couple of weeks, he will also hit another lofty career mark as he is 124 minutes and 55 seconds away from 10,000 career minutes played in the National Lacrosse League.

The NLL’s other monthly award is the Rookie of the Month, which was awarded to Calgary’s Curtis Dickson.

Saturday, the Rock travel to Boston for their second meeting of the season with the Blazers at 7:30pm at the TD Garden.  The game will be broadcast live on TSN2 at 7:30pm.
