The Toronto Rock fell to the Calgary Roughnecks 10-8 at Pengrowth Saddledome in front on an announced 10,193 crowd in their Valentine’s Day matchup.
The Rock, now 6-2, remain undefeated at home but fall to 2-2 on the road.
Dane Dobbie was the first to strike for Calgary, a goal that was answered by Toronto’s Scott Campbell. Kasey Beirnes scored next to give the Rock the lead. With 0:44 left on the clock Colin Doyle put one past Matt King to end the first quarter 3-1.
Stephan Leblanc opened the second quarter followed by Doyle’s second. The Roughnecks opted for a goalie change putting rather newly acquired Mike Poulin in between the pipes, and got back onto the board with a Nolan Heavenor goal past Toronto netminder Steve Dietrich. Blaine Manning netted one for the Rock before Josh Sanderson and Dobbie answered back for Calgary. The Rock headed into the dressing room up 6-4.
The third quarter was controlled by defence until Doyle sunk his third of the night on the power play at the 8:40 mark. After seven unanswered minutes, the Roughnecks drained two past Dietrich to narrow Toronto’s lead to one.
Half way through the final quarter, Tracey Kelusky tied the game at 7-7 and teammate Jeff Shattler scored twice to put Calgary ahead with 4:16 remaining in the game. Rob Marshall sunk one past Poulin to narrow the gap. The Rock pulled Dietrich for the extra man attempt, but the Roughnecks regained possession and scored on the empty net to solidify their 10-8 win.
The Rock play out West again next weekend when they head to Edmonton for a rematch with the Rush. Game time is 3:30 p.m. ET and the game will be shown on TSN2, tape delayed at 7:00p.m.
