PLPA Appeals Hickey’s One-Game Ban

Toronto Trails 1-0 In East Division Final

Oakville, ON – The National Lacrosse League announced on Friday that Rock forward Brett Hickey was assessed a match penalty under rule 63.3 and has been given a one-game suspension. The Professional Lacrosse Players’ Association (PLPA) has appealed the suspension allowing Hickey to remain eligible to play in game two of the East Division Final on Saturday night in Georgia against the Swarm.

In game one of the series, Hickey was given a two-minute minor penalty at the 6:15 mark of the first quarter. Upon league review this week, the NLL determined a match penalty was warranted.

Rule 63.3 – MATCH PENALTY

The referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player or goalkeeper was reckless or endangering his opponent by illegal cross checking.

The appeal will be heard next week and should the ruling be in favour of the PLPA and Hickey, the Rock forward would not miss any games and would be eligible for game one of the Champion’s Cup should Toronto advance. If the Rock do not move past the Swarm, Hickey would serve the one-game suspension at the beginning of the 2018 NLL season.

Saturday’s game in Georgia will be streamed live around the world at 7 p.m. ET on Twitter and can be found at nll.twitter.com as well as on NLLTV.com.
