Byrnes was selected 44th overall pick by the Georgia Swarm in the 2016 NLL Entry Draft. He was acquired by PCLC in the 2021 Expansion Draft from the Philadelphia Wings and suited up in all 18 games during the 2021-2022 season. While competing for PCLC, Byrnes set career highs in 2021-2022 in games played (18), goals (4), assists (6), loose balls (137) and caused turnovers (26).

Byrnes played collegiately at Marquette University and finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in ground balls and caused turnovers. He was elected to Marquette’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022. Byrnes was selected to compete for Team USA at the 2023 World Lacrosse Championships in San Diego. Byrnes also competes for the Waterdogs Lacrosse Club in the Premier Lacrosse League, where he won the 2022 Championship.
