TORONTO – The Toronto Rock hit the road to take on 2009 National Lacrosse League (NLL) expansion team the Boston Blazers on Saturday, March 14th. Ball drop is set for 7:30 p.m. EST at TD Banknorth Garden in Boston, MA.
The Rock (2-7) resume the NLL season after a week hiatus due to the All-Star break. Toronto’s points leader, Jason Crosbie, was the only Rock member in action last weekend. Decked out in East Division All-Star garb Crosbie netted two goals and added one assist in the 27-21 win over the West Division.
Before the All-Star break, the Rock dropped back-to-back games to Minnesota Swarm and Rochester Knighthawks. Despite taking a 4-1 lead over the Swarm and answering back with a fourth quarter three-goal rally against Rochester, Toronto could not hold on to put one in the win column.
“I’ve seen this team play really really well, better than any team in the league,” said Rock head coach Jamie Batley about his team. “But to succeed we need full effort from everyone on the turf, for the entire game. The full 60 minutes.”
With seven games remaining and a slightly more favourable schedule for the second half of the season, the Rock look to turn things around in time to contend for a playoff spot.
“I’m happy with our consistency of effort,” added Batley. “Different guys keep stepping up on our offence.”
Luke Wiles leads the charge for Toronto having already tallied 17 goals at the halfway point of the season. Blaine Manning and Kasey Beirnes are tied for second, both with 15.
Boston (7-3) hopes to keep momentum after a 16-10 whipping of the San Jose Stealth before the All-Star break. Dan Dawson leads the Blazers with 69 points (21 goals, 48 assists), good for second in the league behind Buffalo’s Mark Steenhuis’ 70.
“Dawson is controlling the Boston offence; it is basically revolving around him,” said Batley of the Boston All-Star. “We know how good he is, and he knows how to make the plays.”
“I expect a very good game this weekend,” said Boston Blazers head coach Tom Ryan. “Looking down the Toronto roster you can see it is loaded with talented players.”
The Rock return home the following weekend to host the Rochester Knighthawks on Saturday March 21st at 7:00 p.m.
