Oakville, ON – Toronto Rock Owner, President and General Manager Jamie Dawick has announced his 11-player protected list for the upcoming expansion draft on Mon. Jul. 16 at 4:30 p.m. ET. The San Diego Seals and Philadelphia Wings will begin play in 2018-19 and will mark the first step towards building the rosters for the two new NLL entries.
Teams were permitted to protect 11 players. That list could be made up of ten runners and one goaltender or 11 runners. No more than five of the runners could be forwards. Each current NLL team will lose two players in total in the selection process.
“You’re going to protect what you consider to be your top 10 players and a goaltender in most cases,” said Dawick. “However, there are a lot of things that factor into why a player is protected or left unprotected. The player’s age and contract status being the two biggest factors but there’s a lot that goes into these decisions.”
The decisions Dawick speaks of were not easy to make. He was emphatic in stating that every player in the Toronto Rock organization is an important piece of the franchise and the team’s long-term goals.
“We don’t want to make anyone available and everyone is with us for a reason,” said Dawick. “The truth is, we have to make players available to the expansion teams and expansion is a good thing for the league and the game. This expansion draft format will make the new franchises competitive right away. They will have access to quality lacrosse players through this process. Like most teams, we don’t want to lose anyone, but we’re going to lose two players and now we wait a couple of weeks to see how things unfold and move on from there.”
All players that were on an Active or Inactive List to end the season are eligible for the expansion draft. Players that finished the season on the Practice Player List are not eligible for the expansion draft and will become unrestricted free agents on Aug. 1.
