Rob Hellyer Traded To Las Vegas For Two First Round Picks

Rock All-Time Great Moves West

Oakville, ON – Toronto Rock Owner, President, and GM Jamie Dawick announced today that the club has traded forward Rob Hellyer to the Las Vegas Desert Dogs in exchange for Las Vegas’ first round pick in the 2024 and 2025 NLL Drafts.

“Robbie approached me about possibly relocating out west and both of us thought with that potential relocation, it was best to explore a trade. A player flying in from out west can be challenging” explained Dawick. “That conversation got me on the phone with some western teams and to nobody’s surprise there was a lot of interest in an elite player like Robbie.  Vegas and I got together and got a deal done that we’re happy with.  It all came together pretty quickly over the last 48 hours.”

Hellyer was the last holdover from the Rock’s most recent NLL championship in 2011 and the Lion’s Head, ON native has played his entire career for the Toronto Rock.

“Robbie has been with me almost since day one, joining the club in year two of my ownership,” said Dawick.  “We won a championship together and he’s been a really big part of this organization for 12 years.  He’s a future Toronto Rock Hall of Fame member without a doubt.  There’s a time in life when circumstances change.  We part on good terms, and I wish him all the best and nothing but success in Las Vegas.  We are ready to move forward.”

Originally selected as an 18-year-old in the third round, 30th overall, in the 2010 NLL Draft, Hellyer quickly earned his spot on a veteran laden team en route to a title in his first pro season.

Hellyer leaves the Rock near the top of every all-time franchise statistical category.  He is fourth in points (604), fifth in goals (230), and fifth in assists (374).

Filling the offensive void left by Hellyer won’t be easy, but there’s one puzzle piece that could be almost seamlessly shifted into that spot.

“We make no secret about it that we’ve wanted to get Challen Rogers more involved in the offensive end on a regular basis and the departure of Rob on the right side perhaps accelerates that plan a bit, but we’ve got a plan in place to put into motion.”
