Jr. Rock Teams Looking For Championships At Jr. NLL Tournament

Toronto, ON – The National Lacrosse League has announced the second annual Junior NLL Tournament, which features 21 youth teams representing eight NLL franchises, will return to the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre (TRAC) in Oakville, Ontario from August 29-31.

This year’s tournament has grown significantly with the addition of Midget competition to the Peewee and Bantam divisions that saw teams battle for supremacy a year ago.

“Last year we broke ground with the inaugural event,” said Rock Owner and President Jamie Dawick.  “It was a great first year, but this year’s event is bigger and better.  We are excited to add more teams, more competition and more NLL cities.”

Along with the Toronto Rock, the Buffalo Bandits, Colorado Mammoth, Edmonton Rush, Minnesota Swarm, Philadelphia Wings, Rochester Knighthawks and Vancouver Stealth will be represented across Peewee, Bantam & Midget teams in the weekend-long competition at the TRAC. The teams will follow NLL playing rules in a family-friendly environment with plenty of NLL players, coaches and staff expected to be in attendance.

The Jr. Rock teams will be made up exclusively of players who participated in the 2013-14 Rock Elite League season at the TRAC.

“I’m really proud of the kids that will be representing the Rock,” said Dawick.  “These kids all participate in the Rock Elite League and have chosen to make lacrosse their number one commitment.  All Rock Elite League players had an equal opportunity to be a part of the Jr. Rock teams and the players represent a cross section of skill levels that participate in the Rock Elite League.  The Jr. NLL Tournament will showcase the depth of talent that plays in the league.”

Dawick will be busy during the Jr. NLL tournament as he will coach the Bantam Jr. Rock alongside Rock defender Mike Lum-Walker.  On the bench with the Peewee Jr. Rock will be Toronto Rock netminder Nick Rose and defender Damon Edwards.  Working the bench with the Midget Jr. Rock will be Toronto Rock goaltending coach Pat Campbell and the team’s strength and conditioning coach Sean Holmes.

The Jr. Rock will try to defend their Bantam championship from a year ago as well as look for revenge at the Peewee level where they were bested in the final by the Jr. Mammoth.

Fans who are unable to watch the games in person at the TRAC in Oakville will be able to watch select games from the tournament live online at courtesy of JVI Video Production.  A full broadcast schedule will be released prior to the labour day weekend event.
