Rock Clinch Playoff Spot With Win Over Albany

The March To May Continues

Albany, NY – The Toronto Rock (11-4) secured a spot in the postseason with an 11-9 win over the Albany FireWolves (2-11) at MVP Arena on Saturday night in Albany, NY.  The Rock did what they needed to do, and that was win the game.

“Going into the season, that’s every team’s first goal,” said Rock Head Coach Matt Sawyer when asked about clinching a playoff spot on Saturday night.  “We had an opportunity last week that we didn’t take advantage of and we didn’t want to waste another one, so good on the guys.”

In the first quarter, the Rock were matched on the floor and on the scoreboard by the FireWolves, finishing the opening 15 minutes tied 3-3.  The difference in this game was the Rock pushing their lead to 6-3 and shutting out the FireWolves in the second quarter.

Albany did what was necessary on their end to keep the game close and that included scoring the first goal of the second half to make it a two-goal game.  The Rock were held off the board for almost 13 minutes in the third quarter but struck for two goals, exactly one minute apart, to build their biggest lead of the night and lead 8-4 heading to the fourth quarter.

The two teams traded goals, with Josh Dawick scoring his second of the game, keeping the Rock up by four.  Albany then went on a 4-1 run, closing the gap to a goal, down 10-9 with 41 seconds to play.  On the faceoff after the Albany goal, the Rock’s TD Ierlan won the draw cleanly and flipped it to Latrell Harris who sunk the insurance marker into the empty net.

Dan Craig continued to score and at clutch times, recording three goals and two assists.  He’s caught fire recently with 14 goals in his last four games to run his total to 31 on the season, just three shy of his career-high of 34 goals notched last season.

Tom Schreiber’s four points (1G + 3A) ran his season point total to 95 which tops his career-high of 94 which he reached previously in both 2017 and 2019.

Nick Rose won his 11th game of the season, and once again kept the opposition to under 10 goals stopping 33 of the 42 shots he faced.  Doug Jamieson made 47 saves for Albany.  The Rock outshot the FireWolves 58-42.  Toronto was 1-for-2 on the power play while Albany was 0-for-1.

“Rosey’s the backbone of this organization,” said Rock forward Zach Manns who scored a goal for the second game in a row.  “We expect him to play like that every game and thus far this season he has.”

Tickets are on sale now for the Rock’s next home game at FirstOntario Centre on Saturday, April 1 against the Buffalo Bandits at 7pm ET.  It’s Bill Hostrawser BobbleFist Night and Minor Lacrosse Night!
