Bill Greer Acquired For Picks From Edmonton

Toronto – The Toronto Rock completed a trade today that sends two 2012 second round draft picks to the Edmonton Rush in exchange for defenceman Bill Greer.

Prior to the deal, the Rock had three second round picks in the 2012 draft, two of which were acquired through previous transactions and one being their own pick.  The two second round picks going to Edmonton are Toronto’s own pick and Colorado’s second round pick which was acquired by the Rock in a deal that sent Mike McLellan to the Mammoth in October of 2010.

“I just like everything about him,” said Rock GM Terry Sanderson.  “He’s a great influence in the room and we’ve just become a better team defensively.”

Greer made a significant impression on Sanderson and Rock Head Coach Troy Cordingley after coaching him in the Ontario Lacrosse Association’s Major Series Lacrosse in 2009 culminating in a Brampton Excelsiors Mann Cup Canadian Senior A Championship.

Moving picks to acquire impact players to keep the Rock in the Champion’s Cup conversation has become the modus operandi for the defending NLL Champions.

“We’ve acquired some veteran guys, but guys with a lot of good years ahead of them,” said Sanderson.  “We’ve restocked, and going forward, we may not need to make a lot of moves.  We’ve got a lot of depth at every position in the organization.”

The 30-year old Greer is a veteran of 10 NLL seasons having played with Columbus, Arizona, Rochester, New York, Orlando and most recently Edmonton where he spent the 2011 season. In 133 career games, he has scored 51 goals and added 84 assists for 135 points.  Greer’s best offensive season came in 2003 with Columbus when he tallied 10 goals, 14 assists and 24 points.

The gritty defender won the Champion’s Cup in 2007 with the Rochester Knighthawks alongside a couple of current members of the Rock in Stephen Hoar and Sandy Chapman.

After shipping off defenders Creighton Reid, Kyle Ross and Jeff Gilbert in separate deals, the Rock have subsequently added Nick Inch from Minnesota, Jon Durno from Boston, Bruce Codd via free agency and now Greer from the Rush.  Add into the mix 2011 second round draft choice Jesse Gamble and the Rock have done some significant work in the off-season.

Speaking of the off-season, it’s almost over.  Toronto Rock training camp begins on Saturday, November 26th in Six Nations at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.  The Rock will open the 2012 NLL regular season on Sunday, January 8th at Air Canada Centre against the Calgary Roughnecks.
