Toronto, ON – The Toronto Rock head to Calgary this weekend for the final game of the 2005 regular season. What’s at stake? Plenty.
For the Roughnecks, a victory earns the team a first-ever West Division title and a first-found Playoff bye. Calgary is especially interested in the first-round bye as they look to heal injuries that have hampered them all season.
Will the Rock oblige their Canadian rivals with a lazy effort? Not likely. Many are speculating that the game will turn into a battle for the title of toughest team. It is rumoured that coach Chris Hall may activate known aggressor Chris “No Fear” Kinnear from the practice roster to offset the Rock’s number one tough guy Tim “The Surgeon” O’Brien.
“There’s definitely an east-west rivalry here that carries through from the summer leagues. It’ll be interesting to see what that translates into in this game,” said Terry Sanderson, Toronto Rock Head Coach and GM.
A Rock win would enable the team to establish a number of special milestones, beginning with a new franchise regular season record of 13-3. More significantly, Colin Doyle, Blaine Manning and Josh Sanderson sit 1-2-3 in League scoring. If either of these players finished at the top, it would mark the team’s first ever Scoring Champion. Can the line-mates finish 1-2-3? That would be a feat never before accomplished!
Josh Sanderson is just 2 assists away from breaking his own league record for assists in a season with 68. Teammate Colin Doyle is hot on his heels with 64 assists. Finally, Rock Captain Jim Veltman has his usual comfortable lead in the loose balls with 170 heading into Toronto’s final game. Veltman has led the league in this department every year of his career.
Rock fans can catch Sunday’s game live on AM 640 Toronto at 4:00pm or at 5:30pm on Rogers Sportsnet tape delay.
