TORONTO ROCK DROP FIRST HOME GAME OF 2010

The Toronto Rock dropped their first home game of the season to the Orlando Titans. With the 16-12 loss the Rock are 4-1 at home and fall to 6-4 on the season.

Bob Watson and Steve Dietrich combined for 27 saves. Colin Doyle had six points for the Rock and Sandy Chapman had a team high three goals.

Matt Vinc got the win for Orlando stopping 52 of 63 shots. Casey Powell led the Titans with four goals and four assists.

Kasey Beirnes and Garrett Billings opened game scoring, with the only two goals of the first quarter. The Rock’s Bob Watson stopped all 10 Orlando shots to keep the Titans scoreless.

Casey Powell and Pat Maddalena tied the game within the first five minutes of the second, until Mike Hominuck gave Toronto the lead again. It was short-lived as Powell scored his second. The back and forth continued with Sandy Chapman netting one for the Rock past goalie Matt Vinc. Powell drained his third for the hat trick and Matt Alrich and Jordan Hall gave Orlando the two-point lead but Colin Doyle narrowed it back to one, with an unassisted goal. Alrich struck again followed by Ryan Boyle to end the half with the Titans up 8-5.

Stephan Leblanc got Toronto back into the game with a goal to start the second half. Chapman was next with an unassisted goal, but Alrich collected the hat trick with a goal past Bob Watson. Defence took over for the next nine minutes until Leblanc scored for the Rock. With 16 seconds left on the clock Maddalena scored to end the third quarter with the Titans up 10-8.

Orlando went on a four goal run with Powell, Chad Thompson, Boyle and Mat MacLeod which led to a Rock goalie change in favour of Steve Dietrich. Billings posted Toronto’s ninth followed by an unassisted goal by Chapman, his third of the night. Doyle was next but Bill Greer answered back for the Titans. Watson went back into Toronto’s net but after a time out both teams pulled their goalies and both Hominuck and Pat Merrill benefited from the empty nets. The game ended 16-12 for the Titans.

The Rock have a week off but return to the Air Canada Centre on Friday, March 12 when they host the Buffalo Bandits. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Fans are invited onto the turf following the game for Toronto Sun Autograph Night.
