Rock Hold Off Seals For 6th Straight Win

ROCK HOLD OFF SEALS FOR SIXTH STRAIGHT WIN

Toronto Wins 12-11

Toronto, ON – They don’t ask how, they just ask how many… in a row. The answer is now six after the Toronto Rock (7-1) defeated the San Diego Seals (4-4) by a score of 12-11 on Friday night at Scotiabank Arena. The Rock survived a late San Diego power play, and Nick Rose made the key saves when needed in the final moments to preserve the win.

Special teams were a big part of the story in this game. The Rock finished 4 for 6 with the man advantage and killed off 4 of 6 San Diego opportunities. No penalty kill was bigger than the Rock silencing the Seals power play over the final 2:32 of the fourth quarter as Adam Jones was serving a major penalty for goaltender interference.

“It was a good win for us,” said Rock Head Coach Matt Sawyer. “We were clearly rusty having 14 days off and that was evident. San Diego really tested us and they’re a good team.”

The Rock got on the board first and pounded home a couple of goals late in the opening quarter to take a 4-2 lead after the opening quarter. Their lead increased to three goals by the half with Damon Edwards scoring on a tremendous solo effort with 28 seconds left in the half to put the Rock up 8-5.

The Seals were able to score in bunches in the third quarter. The score two goals just 16 seconds apart and then scored another pair just 24 seconds apart near the end of the quarter to close the gap and trail 11-10 heading for the final quarter.

The Rock defence stepped up in a big way in the fourth quarter along with Rose between the pipes. The defensive corps sacrificed their bodies several times and the balls that did get through, Rose stopped all but one in the frame. Dan Lintner’s second goal of the game stood up as the winner.

Toronto got scoring from up and down the lineup. Tom Schreiber was the top point-getter with a goal and four assists for a five-point night. Dan Craig had his second three-goal game of the season and added an assist. Lintner and Johnny Powless each scored twice while Rob Hellyer, Challen Rogers, Brandon Slade, and Edwards scored once each.

The Rock will play their first of two consecutive road games when they travel to New England next weekend for their first meeting with the Black Wolves. Toronto will not play at home again until Saturday, March 16 against Rochester.
