Rock Win Preseason Finale 12-10 Over New York

Toronto Finishes With 2-1 Preseason Record

Oakville, ON – The Toronto Rock finished the preseason with a 12-10 win over the New York Riptide on Saturday night at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville.  The win leaves the Rock with a 2-1 record in exhibition play, heading into next Saturday’s home opener against the Vancouver Warriors.

“It was another opportunity to work on some things and it’s the last test before the real thing starts, so it’s nice to get a win,” explained Rock captain Challen Rogers.  “I was excited to hear the fans tonight and looking forward to getting to Hamilton and FirstOntario Centre to compete for real.”

The Rock came flying out of the gate in the first quarter as Rogers struck first for the home side just 39 seconds into the game.  Zach Manns and Tom Schreiber followed with goals to give the Rock a 3-0 lead just past the midway point of the frame.  The Riptide scored a pair, just 53 seconds apart, to narrow the gap to a goal after one.

The Riptide turned their two-goal run into a four-goal run and a 4-3 lead just over 8 minutes into the second quarter on tallies by Jeff Teat and Connor Kearnan.  After just over 20 minutes without a goal, the Rock’s Stephen Keogh ripped a shot past Steven Orleman in the Riptide net to tie the game 4-4 leading into the half.  The Rock held the edge in shots on goal 25-16 at the break.

Corey Small and Marley Angus scored 33 seconds apart to put the Rock up 6-4 less than five minutes into the third.  The see-saw battle continued with the Riptide scoring twice in 40 seconds to tie the game 6-6.  The rest of the third belonged to the Rock with Josh Jubenville, Keogh, and Dan Craig scoring in the final four minutes to give the Rock a 9-6 lead heading for home.

In the final quarter, when the Riptide scored, the Rock answered back.  With the score 11-8 Toronto, the Riptide made things interesting with goals just 21 seconds apart to draw to within a goal with 2:27 to play.  As was the case all night, when the Rock needed a goal, they got one.  This time it was Craig with an ultra-athletic change-of-direction dunk from behind the goal with 1:15 left to seal the Rock victory.

Nick Rose played the full 60 minutes in the Rock cage, getting the win.  At the other end Steven Orleman also played the full game for the Riptide and suffered the loss.

“I think it was a full team effort tonight and through the first couple exhibition games we weren’t really all clicking at the same time and tonight we were good offensively, defensively, and goaltending,” said Rose.  “I think tonight was our best effort in preseason and it feels good heading into the home opener next weekend.”

The Rock will now finalize their Active and Practice Rosters as the team must cut down to a 21-man Active Roster and sign up to 4 players on the Practice Roster by Monday at 3pm ET.
