What To Expect From Monday’s NLL Draft

Toronto, ON – The 2014 NLL Draft is just a few days away, but come Monday night at 7pm, Toronto Rock General Manager Terry Sanderson will have a chance to put his feet up and relax for a little while as most of his work in assembling talent has been done via trades and signings prior to the draft.  The Rock don’t hold a pick until the fourth round, 33rd overall.

“If there ever was a time not to have any picks early in a draft, this is it,” explained Terry Sanderson.  “With the recent moves we have made, we don’t have many holes to fill in our roster and there will already be a tremendous amount of competition at our training camp.”

In recent weeks, the Rock have acquired defenders Brodie Merrill and Brock Sorensen through trades as well as signing unrestricted free agent Jeff Gilbert.  Those three additions have helped address some issues on the defensive side of the ball.

In total, the Rock hold four selections in the draft.  One in each of the 4th and 5th rounds and two picks in the 6th round.

“I’m looking for a guy that just might have a shot,” explained Sanderson who acknowledged that not many players drafted in the later rounds make an NLL roster.  “Given our recent additions, an offensive guy might have a better chance at sticking with us.  Players getting an opportunity to play with some very talented feeders could produce some chemistry that would give them a long look in our camp.”

Sanderson has been no stranger to trade talks this summer, which does lead to some speculation that if the right deal is there, it could be an opportunity to move up.

“The biggest question is what is a fair price given that we have addressed most of our immediate needs through trades and free agent signings,” said Sanderson. “I expect little to no dealing of any significance at this year’s draft.”

Fans can watch Monday’s draft live from the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville, ON at 7pm ET at nll.com.  The event is open to the public and there is no charge for admission.
